Buenos Aires

Hi again everyone

I think I last wrote from Montevideo in Uruguay. We left there and spent one night in a gorgeous tourist place called Colonia (unfortunately tourist prices). We had a braai on the beach and then a bit of a party. We had to be up to catch the ferry at 3am so some people partied till then, some people slept on a tarpaulin under the stars and Baz and I decided to try out our new hamock. Good idea but practicallity very difficult especially with someone who wriggles as much as Baz. Anyway, 3 attempts to get and stay in, and about an hour after going to bed we finally managed to get some sleep. We arrived in BA which is a gorgeous city (even Baz and I the country bumpkins like it). We went straight to the Chile Embassy to put in my visa application. It did not go smoothly and we had to keep returning with new info etc. Eventually they spoke to the consular and accepted my application (after spending the first 3 mornings in the embassy). Unfortunately it was a public holiday on Fri and they would not process my visa till monday. The truck left on Sat without me. Baz was really good and sat with me in the embassy the whole time but he's gone off on the truck so he can video some killer whales and seals etc in Patagonia for me. Luckily for me, the truck will only be stopping off at one place and the rest of the time they will be driving to Ushaia (the most southern city in the world, where all the boats leave from to go to the Antartica.) Baz has 5 days of driving and I have a 4 hr flight to get there, not a bad sacrifice. The truck only arrives on Thur so that buys me a few days to get my visa sorted. I am gonna try apply for my Bolivia visa after I collect my Chile visa tomorrow if i can. My flight is booked for Wed but I can change it if need be. Wat a pain!!!!!! Baz and I got to do most the tourist sites in BA, even got to see a tango show, and I even got a dance, twice!!!

A few guys from our tour decided to stay in BA for a few days and fly down cause they weren't so keen on the long drive so I am not alone just yet. Unfortunately they stayed in BA to shop or party. They get in when the sun comes up then go to bed till lunch. Not exactly what I feel like, so I've been exploring the markets and getting a bit of sleep and pampering (facials are so cheap out here). I feel human again, the first time in ages so not such a bad thing.

Well, must end off. Take care and keep in touch.
Lots of love

Argentina

Hi Guys

Just a quick note to say we are in Argentina but Barry will be leaving with the truck tomorrow. I cant get my visas in time and it has been a huge mission but they have finally accepted my application so I should be able to collect it next week. In the mean time, Baz is driving down and I am flying down next week. Luckily I wont be missing much as the next 5 days are mostly driving. Such a pain!!!!!! Others than that, everything is going really well and Baz and I are really loving it. I have put our photos on CD and should have some time over the next week so I'll see if I can download some onto the website so you can have a look.

Take care, love and miss you lots

Uruguay

Hi guys

Just a quick note from Uruguay. Havent done to much since the last email. Stayed in a gorgeous place with hot springs (so hot that we almost couldnt bear them). The Kumuka truck (another overland company that we keep running into) parked next to us so we had a bit of a bender with them - great fun. It all started when we took them on in the truck olympics earlier on. We challenged them to a game of football this time and Baz put on a sterling performance scoring 3 goals in the first half then spraining his ancle and having to sit out (he´s almost back to normal now). We won 9-4 or something like that. The party carried on until the early hours and we all left for Montevideo (capital of Uruguay) the next day. We´ve been to a local market where they sell everything form snakes, fish and even turanchulas (spelling??). Then we had lunch at the biggest braai/bbq in the world - I think we had the best lump of steak we have ever eaten. Went out again for supper and misunderstood the waiter and most people ordered 1.5m of pizza, so needless to say, none of us are hungry this morning. Anyway, still having great fun. The group is starting to couple off now, so we´re placing bets.

Off to Colonia tonight then catch ferry tomorrow morning 4:30am to Buenos Aires.
Cheers again
Lots of love

Pantanal

Hi everyone, after Bonito we travelled to the pantanal, the largest wetland in the world (the size of France). It was brilliant, we got to swim in the swamp with parana, camen (small aligators) and possibly anacondas (although we did not see one). So many birds......... a bird watchers paradise. Slept in hammocks, eaten alive by mozi´s, even went horse riding and camoeing thru the swamps. Got a chance to parana fish but could not land the blasted fish (soz Dad). Saw a poor cow killed in camp (we needed the meat and they kill one a month by stabbing the jugular vein, bleeding it to death to drain all the blood and then eating it the same day - delicious.

Moving on from the pantanal, we went to the Brazil border to see the Iguazu falls which are well worth a visit. (which are absolutely spectacular) Got plenty of photos. Also went up in helicopter over the falls ....... amazing. Moved on to Argentina side of falls and spent a further 2 nights there (are leaving for Uraguay today tho). Is full moon so got a unique chance to see devils throat falls in moonlights.

Hope you all well. Lots of love, Jen x x x x x x

Moving on from Rio

Hi again everyone

Here´s a bit more news from Baz and I who are looking gorgeous and tanned (had to rub it in a bit since it´s been snowing so much in the UK). We are so loving our tour. We are all getting to know each other and we really have been blessed with a good bunch of people. We originally got told we only had 4 single guys but I think we´ve ended up with 6 guys, 2 couples and about 10 girls. Almost everyone is really up for most things so we all have a good laugh. We also have a deaf girl whose friend was meant to be on the trip too, but she found out she was pregnant so could not come. We had been so fortunate to have another girl on the trip (totally by chance) who works with the deaf so she can comunicate with her using sign. Luckily Natalie (the deaf girl) can lip read really well. Anyway, we have all had to learn sign and after 1 week of being together we are getting pretty good!!!! It is such fun and watching our group now is a laugh because even if we are not speaking to Natalie, we all use our hands a lot. She is in my cooking group (Baz is a different group) so I should be pretty good by the end of the trip.

Rio was great but we were all ready to leave by the end of the week. The crime there is incredible, I recon most people I spoke to had some incident happen to them - Baz and I were pretty lucky as we only had the one incident with the 2 granny´s trying to pick pocket me and Baz soon sorted them out - my hero!!! We left Rio and drove on to a place called Parati where we camped for 3 nights (I think). Most the other tour companies do the same route but for some reason they stayed in town in the other campsite so our site was very quite which was lovely. The campsite was right on the beach so we´d go swiming then grap a çhopp (beer) on the beach and watch the sun go down. What a life!!!!! We had a boat trip planned and 2 other tours joined us on the boat. By total coincidence, one of the Dragaman groups was one of them and Sally Gamble (my best friend from when i was 4/5 years old in Zim) was in that group. Sal and I spent the whole day together which was wonderful. Our Oasis group was so much more lively than the other groups and by the end of the day we were having back summersaults off the back of the boat and compertitions climbing up the side of the boat (big boat). Rach (our tour leader) and I both lost our bikini tops temporarerly on the way up the side of the boat. Only 3 of us girls attempted and managed it, most the boys had a go and Baz seems to have made great friends with a real nice guy from Leeds. They are always competing with each other and edging each other on. In fact they managed to convince a group of guys to go out cycling in the rain just now (really red mud) so will be coming back totally covered I should think. I took part in the back summie comp which was a piece of cake thanks to all the practice I got from our houseboat trips. Everyone was so impressed, and most the boys wouldn´t even try. When we got back to camp we had the truck olympics where 3 different tour companies challenged each other at different races. Unfortunaltely I think our group must have had a bit to much punch on the boat as we only came 3rd. The races were the Gerry can carrying relay (which I renamed the Chigub race), some crawley race where the girl has to wrap herself around the bloke while he crawls across the beach (very difficult to hang on!!), truck pushing race, quizz and eating competition. Then they had all the drivers challenge each other to a tire pushing race. Our driver didn´t do to well, and they asked if there were any challenges. Well, Baz and Martin are never ones to turn down an challenge and they both had a go. Martin hit a rock and fell over and Baz (who has obviously practised in the workshops) went like the crackers and wipped everyone. Everyone was very impressed, including me! and he had to down a special drink as a result at prize giving. I think that was the only race we won!!

We´ve had a few days on the road where we´ve entertained ourselves by having surfing competions on the cooler box in the moving lorry. I was the only girl again, although Sue would have tried but was scared of breaking the cooller box (she´s a bit heavier). Martin and I won, which was pure luck. The rest all fell off when the truck hit a bump. We are staying at a gorgeous ecological hostel at the mo. It has a swimming pool and hammocks everywhere. Baz and I even have our own room. We went on the most stunning excursion yesterday, snorkling down a river where Caimens (croc like things) and anaconders (snakes) - excuse my spelling, swim. We got split into to groups, girls and guys which was great fun. Natalie was with us so we had to try use our limited sigh language to translate what the guide said. The other girl who signs was sick. We had such fun and had to change into wet suits then hike thru the forest down to the crystal clear river. Our girl group met a herd of wild pig going down which was scary but fun. We all had to get behind the guide etc, just like being at home. (infact this place is so similar to home its unreal). We also saw 2 camen (boys saw none) but it wasn´t scary swiming with them because the guide remained so calm. No ananconders tho, 2 girls saw and otter and we all saw plenty fish. A stunning river!!!!! Then we went to look for Macaws and Tucans at an old meteorite. Saw quite a few macaws and one tucan, and few ibis. Boys also saw monkeys and we saw a fox. lovely day but we´re quite tired now.

Mum and Dad hope everything is alright. David I´m doing my best to find you an anaconder (going to pantanal tomorrow so maybe then). Alan and Anita, hope you well too. Glad the farm shop meeting went well. Hi to everyone else!!!!!

Lots of love from Brazil

Rio Carnival

Hi everyone, I thought we´d better write you an email before we head out of Rio. We´ve had a brilliant week, carnival has been fab. Everyone goes round with costumes on or flowers everywhere. They also tend to wear VERY little and Baz goes around with an amazed look on his face. I even got Baz to wear a wreath of flowers for the carnival - cant send you any photos yet as I havent figured out how to do it. Our hotel is in the centre of parties area. Every night there are street parties and bands playing and last night we even had the drag queen parade come past our hotel. There are so many drag queens and prostitutes parading our road. /some times it is very difficult to figure out if they are male or female. There is also an amazing number of gays here, we have a gay club just down the road and there is a gay beach somewhere else. They are all very open, both gays and lady-boys, and you see them everywhere and get so used to it you dont bat an eyelid. Everyone here seems to be fitness freaks so when you are on the beach you often pass gorgeous guys (and girls) going for a run or doing exercises. Baz and I started trying to get fit but gave up after about day 2. We went for a 4 hr walk up St Theresa which is soooo steep and the next day I was very stiff so we´ve taken it a bit easy since then. We´ve done most the tourist things, Christ the Redeemer, all the beaches etc. This place really is gorgeous. We even went to a football game in the largest capacity stadium in the world. There are 100´s of helicopters everywhere, Andrew you´ld love it. Barry has taken some good video of them for you. The carnival was amazing, we all went with our new group of friends and only got home at 5;15am.

Our group from the bus seem great. So far we have met half of them but our group meeting is tonight and we start the tour tommorrow. Apparently there are 2 couples, 13 single girls and 4 single blokes, lucky them!!!!! Baz wishes he was single again.

Well, gotta get everything sorted as we are leaving tomorrow for Parati, just south of Rio. Cant wait, its meant to be stunning. Hope you are all well.

Lots of love
Baz and Jen
